Description:

Note: This position will be based in Syracuse, NY, with frequent travel to New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI) in New York City. Work location will be 620 Madison Street, Syracuse, New York 13210 (New York State Office of Mental Health office on the Hutchings Psychiatric Center campus).

This is a PART-TIME position. Salary is $20,998.50

The Youth Coordinator for the OnTrackNY SAMHSA Healthy Transitions program will provide support for the development, implementation and evaluation of activities related to a grant recently awarded to New York State. This grant is funded as part of President Obama's "Now is the Time" Plan to reduce gun violence through ensuring quality coverage of mental health treatment, with a focus on young people.

The funds are being used to expand New York State's OnTrackNY program which focuses on delivering training and implementation support to agencies providing specialized early intervention services for adolescents and young adults experiencing a newly emerging psychotic disorder.

An ideal candidate must have firsthand experience with receiving mental health treatment services and should be comfortable with using that experience to enhance his/her work within the program.

Duties:

This initiative is based in the Center for Practice Innovations (CPI) in the Division of Behavioral Health Services and Policy Research (DBHSPR), at NYSPI. The incumbent will report to the Project Director.

Responsibilities, tasks and activities will include:

  • Working with the program leadership and staff to ensure that OnTrackNY services effectively engage youth in the Upstate NY region. This includes coordinating and engaging youth in social media campaign and youth council. 
  • Contributing to the development of promotional materials, outreach strategies, and other enhancements to the OnTrackNY model in areas of culture, gender, and sexuality 
  • Coordinating and assisting in development, implementation, and evaluation of activities under the grant, including conducting interviews with program participants 
  • Enhancing program's relationships with youth organizations in proximity to the new program site and throughout the NY state 
  • Making presentations about the program to the community, youth groups, and schools in collaboration with outreach workers

Qualifications:

  • An ideal candidate must have firsthand experience with receiving mental health treatment services and should be comfortable with using that experience to enhance his/her work within the program.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to speak with small and large groups of people 
  • Experience conducting interviews about sensitive topics 
  • Experience with youth leadership and advocacy 
  • Experience with community-based mental health services 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Google applications 
  • Bachelor's degree is preferred 
  • Experience with peer support is preferred 
  • Experience with LGBT issues is preferred 
  • Bilingual is preferred


Special requirements:

Occasional travel to community agencies located in the region is expected.
