Tonight's Topic: You Don't Look Sick!  A Personal Perspective on the Invisible People with Mental Disabilities

Maryam Husamudeen, our APS User Support Specialist, will share her perspective about trying to support others by giving support she was not receiving for herself because she was living with an "invisible" disability. ('You Don't Look Sick!). People often have stereotypes about what mental disabilities look like. But when things like abuse happen "behind closed doors," those who appear to 'have it all together' may actually be the ones most in need of support.

There are many reasons people don't talk about what's happening: fear, shame, not wanting to burden others, or just not having  people who feel safe to talk to. All of these things can cause people to suffer in silence. But nobody deserves to live in fear or shame. Maryam will share her personal story then lead a discussion that invites those with related experiences about "feeling invisible" or "dismissed because they didn't look sick enough," and the effects those have on our sense of wellbeing.
