News from the Academy of Peer Services

Dear Academy of Peer Services Learners,

We are now completing the first month (four weeks) of Term 2, 2020, which will end on July 20. We hope the time has been productive for you. We have some updates on courses that are available now.

(1) We have updated and relaunched two of the Elective Courses:

·        Social Security Entitlements (2.0 hours)

(2) There are now four new APS CE (Continuing Education) options:

·        Building Financial Hope: Guidance for Social Security Recipients, Providers, and Supporters (2 APS CE hours)

·        Supporting Older Adults Part 1: Honoring Their Strengths (1.5 APS CE hours)

·        Supporting Older Adults Part 2: Supporting Transitions (1.5 APS CE hours)

·        Supporting Older Adults Part 3: Our Elders Speak (2.0 APS CE hours)

About the New APS Category - Continuing Education (CE) Courses:

Based on recent webinars by recognized leaders on topics requested by our learner community, we have developed APS CE (Continuing Education) courses. Working with our partner organizations and the many subject matter experts by experience, technical specialists, and participants in the live sessions has been enriching and rewarding for us all. And we are now able to take the recordings, edit them for the best viewing, and offer content to meet the changing needs of our workforce for continuing education.

Like all of our other Academy Courses, these courses are based on relevant learning objectives, interaction with the material, questions for reflection, a post training test to demonstrate the objectives have been met, and a course evaluation that allows you, the learner, to give feedback on your experience with the course. After successful completion, the course title and designated number of hours for the course credit will appear as continuing education on your APS transcript.

Next Up in our Series of Continuing Education Options:

The NYC Peer and Community Health Worker Workforce Consortium is now offering a weekly lunchtime session on Wednesdays about Peer Workforce Integration Action Planning and Implementation as part of our Academy webinar series.

Session 1: Getting the Conversation Started was led by Consortium Coordinator, Aviva Cohen and she was joined by Leila Clark, OMH Regional Advocacy Specialist for the Hudson River region as the featured guest on the topic of developing communities of practice. There was lively audience participation masterfully facilitated by Curtis Dann-Messier, the incoming Director of the Consortium. (Click here to meet Curtis and learn about his background, click here.) Curtis will be the featured presenter for session 2, which is next Wednesday from 12:00 – 1:30 Eastern.

These sessions are being recorded and will be offered in the near future as part of the APS CE Series, but we encourage employers, supervisors, peer specialists, work colleagues, and others with a role in peer workforce integration in your location to register for and join the conversation “live” for the remaining sessions:
